Julie Christ Oakes, Lecturer ( Ph.D. University of Chicago)
Julie Oakes teaches courses in East Asian Civilization, Japanese history and Chinese history at UMBC and at the Shady grove campus. Prior to returning to graduate school, she taught high school American and Japanese history at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. Her dissertation focuses on the creation of Japan’s National Treasure system and its ensuing contestation. In the fall of 2008, her article entitled “Japan’s National Treasure System and the Commodification of Art” was published in Looking Modern: East Asian Visual Culture from the Treaty Ports to World War II. Her special interests include art, art policy, and culture in 19th and 20th century Japan.
