Spring 2021 Advising Guidelines:
During the COVID-19 campus closure, students will be assigned a faculty advisor who will contact them via their UMBC email address, letting them know when they will be available for advising for advanced course registration. In addition to your assigned advisor’s availability, the department will also share a sign up sheet listing the availability of all history faculty, in case the time your advisor has available does not suit your schedule. Please look for the sign-up sheet here and via email starting three weeks before registration.
As of Fall 2018 the History Department changed the format for undergraduate major and minor advising for advanced course registration. Instead of meeting with a specific, assigned advisor students will now be advised and get clearance for course registration by coming to open advising hours. Available advisors and advising hours will be posted on the History Department website and in the History Department.
Note: If you have already established an advising relationship with a particular History professor, look out for their available advising times to see them during the advising weeks. If your schedules don’t align, you may contact them directly by email to set up an advising appointment. Otherwise, history majors can be advised by any History Department advisor available during the open advising hours.
If you have questions about this process, please contact the Spring 2021 semester advising coordinator: Susan McDonough at email@example.com.
Before heading to your advising appointment, please:
- Go to the Advising Center on your myUMBC webpage and check your degree audit to see what courses and requirements you have fulfilled.
- Download and fill in the History Department’s Requirements to Complete the History Major or Requirements to complete the History Minor form.
- Please bring this form with you to your advising session. This will ensure that you have a productive and timely meeting.
